How to Survive Weddings, Bachelor Parties, and Wild Weekends

Nov 29, 20253 min read

Four factors end streaks on these weekends, and alcohol is the main one. A countermeasure for each, including the recovery day.

These weekends combine four things, and it is the combination rather than any one of them that ends streaks: alcohol, a disrupted sleep schedule, an unfamiliar room with nobody watching, and social pressure to treat the normal rules as suspended.

Each part has a countermeasure. None of them requires announcing anything to anyone.

Alcohol is the main variable

Worth being direct, because everything else is secondary to it.

Alcohol impairs exactly the judgement you are relying on, and it does so gradually enough that you do not notice the impairment while it is happening. It also fragments the second half of the night, which is why you wake at 4am, awake, alone, with your phone.

You do not have to be sober to get through the weekend. Decide a number before you go, when you are clear-headed, and it will be a better number than the one you would pick at 11pm.

Practical cover for declining: a drink already in your hand, driving, an early start, on antibiotics. Most people ask once and then forget entirely. The pressure is far more anticipated than actual.

Set it up before you travel

Start the block from home, covering the whole trip plus the day you get back. The recovery day is a common one to lose: tired, hungover, low mood, no plans. Cover it.

Tell one person who is going. Not the group. One friend, framed simply: "I am trying to drink less this weekend, keep an eye on me." That is true, it is enough, and it gives you an ally without a conversation about anything else.

Know your room situation. Sharing a room is protective. A room to yourself after a late night is the highest-risk part of the weekend, and knowing that in advance lets you plan the evening rather than discover the problem at 2am.

During

Eat properly. Long days of drinking with no real meals produce exactly the depleted state where decisions get worse. Unglamorous and it works.

Phone charges across the room. Do this when you first put your bag down, not when you get in at 2am.

Get outside in the morning. Ten minutes of daylight, even hungover. It helps the sleep timing, which is what you are trying to protect across a multi-day event.

Have an exit line ready. Knowing how you will leave without a discussion makes leaving considerably more likely. "I am going to head off, see you at breakfast," said while walking, is enough.

Strip clubs and the group plan

Worth thinking about before you are standing outside one at midnight.

You can go and leave early. You can not go and say you are wrecked, which will be true. You can be the one who takes someone home. All of these are ordinary and none of them requires explaining yourself.

The thing that makes this hard is anticipating a confrontation that almost never comes. In practice, one person leaving early at 1am is entirely unremarkable to a group that has been drinking since six.

If it is your own stag weekend, you get to say what it involves. People consistently forget this.

The day after

The highest-risk window of the whole weekend, and the one nobody plans for. You are hungover, under-slept, low, and back in your own space with nothing on.

Plan something for it before you leave. Someone to see, somewhere to be, food arranged. Do not schedule the recovery day as an empty box, because the combination of low mood and no plans is the setup that ends more streaks than the weekend itself.

Get outside and sleep at your normal time that night, even if it is early. Getting the schedule back immediately is worth more than trying to sleep the whole day off.

If it goes wrong

One night. Not the weekend, not the month.

Message your person on the way home rather than sitting with it for three days. Then work out which of the four factors did it, since it is nearly always identifiable: too much to drink, a room to yourself, four hours of sleep, or an unplanned recovery day.

Whichever it was, that is the one you plan for next time. There will be a next time, because there always is another wedding.

A block set before you travel is the piece that survives the weekend regardless of how it goes. See how a block you cannot bypass works, read the travel and hotel guide, or check where you stand with the porn addiction test.
